Introduction

Kota, Rajasthan, is widely known for its coaching institutes that prepare students for competitive examinations such as JEE and NEET. However, two separate incidents involving the deaths of students have raised concerns about student safety, accommodation management and the well-being of young aspirants living away from their families.

In one incident, a 16-year-old JEE aspirant from Madhya Pradesh was found dead in his paying guest (PG) room. In another incident, a 19-year-old NEET aspirant from Bihar died during treatment after being found unconscious in his hostel bathroom. Both incidents have drawn attention to the importance of student welfare and appropriate safety measures in student accommodation.

JEE Aspirant Found Dead in PG Room

The first incident involved a 16-year-old student from Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh, who had moved to Kota approximately six months earlier to prepare for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

According to police, the student attended a routine mock test at his coaching institute on Sunday afternoon. After returning to his PG room in the Mahaveer Nagar-I area, he stopped responding to calls and did not open the door despite repeated knocks.

The PG operator subsequently looked through a window and found the student hanging inside the room. Police were informed and reached the location. The body was taken to MBS Hospital, and the student's family was notified.

Police stated that no suicide note had been recovered from the room. The circumstances surrounding the student's death were under investigation, and the reason had not been established at the time of reporting.

Second Incident Involves a NEET Aspirant from Bihar

In a separate incident, a 19-year-old NEET aspirant named Gautam Kumar, from Darbhanga district of Bihar, was found unconscious in the bathroom of his hostel room in Kota's Landmark area.

The student had reportedly been living in Kota for nearly two years and had made two attempts to clear the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

He was taken to MBS Hospital, where he died during treatment on Sunday. The circumstances surrounding his death remained under investigation, and the exact cause had not been established at the time of reporting.

Family Alleges Negligence by Hostel Authorities

Following Gautam Kumar's death, his family raised questions about hostel management and alleged negligence in monitoring the student's absence.

The family questioned why the hostel authorities had not noticed his absence during scheduled meals. They also alleged that the incident came to light after they contacted a relative staying at a nearby hostel and asked him to check on Gautam.

The family filed a complaint alleging negligence by the hostel authorities. Police registered an FIR under relevant sections and initiated an investigation.

The allegations had not been established as confirmed findings at the time of reporting. The investigation and post-mortem findings were expected to help clarify the circumstances surrounding the student's death.

Importance of Student Safety and Well-Being

These incidents have renewed attention on the safety and well-being of students who move to Kota to prepare for competitive examinations. Living away from family while managing demanding academic schedules can make regular communication, emotional support and a safe living environment particularly important.

Coaching institutes, PG operators and hostel management teams can contribute to student welfare through appropriate monitoring procedures, clear emergency-response plans and timely communication with parents or guardians.

  • Regular Communication: Maintaining contact with students and their families can help identify concerns early.
  • Student Monitoring: Appropriate attendance and absence-monitoring procedures can help accommodation providers respond when a student is unexpectedly unreachable.
  • Emergency Response: Clear procedures can help ensure that concerns are addressed promptly.
  • Emotional Support: Access to counselling and trusted support systems can help students manage academic and personal challenges.
  • Family Involvement: Regular conversations can help students feel connected to their support networks while living away from home.

These measures are important considerations for student welfare, although the circumstances of each individual incident must be determined through a proper investigation.

Challenges Faced by Students Preparing for Competitive Exams

Students preparing for JEE, NEET and other competitive examinations often adjust to a new city, unfamiliar accommodation and demanding study routines. Along with academic preparation, they may need to manage daily responsibilities and stay connected with family members.

A supportive living and learning environment can help students feel safer and more connected. Students should be encouraged to communicate with trusted family members, teachers or counsellors when they face difficulties or need assistance.

Parents and guardians can also discuss accommodation arrangements, emergency contacts and available support systems before students move to another city for coaching.

Conclusion

The two student deaths in Kota have brought student safety, hostel management and student well-being into focus. While the family of the NEET aspirant alleged negligence by hostel authorities, the allegations require proper investigation before any conclusion can be reached.

The incidents highlight the importance of responsible accommodation management, timely communication with families and appropriate student welfare measures. Creating a safer and more supportive environment for students preparing for competitive examinations requires attention to both their living conditions and their overall well-being.
