About Central Institute of Buddhist Studies(CIBS)
In the early thirteenth century, King Morup of Ladakh mandated that young monks and novices travel to Tibet for higher Buddhist studies. For centuries, Ladakhi monks studied and conducted research in renowned Mahaviharas such as Deprung, Sera, Gadan, Tashi Lhunpo, Sakya, and Dregung. This tradition ended abruptly in 1959 due to political instability in Tibet. To preserve Buddhist heritage in Ladakh, Venerable Kushok Bakula Rinpoche (1917–2003) led efforts to revive Buddhist education. Under his guidance, the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies was established in Leh as a centre for traditional Buddhist learning, philosophy, and culture, leveraging the region’s strategic location and historical significance. 1442
