About Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science
In its early years at 210 Bowbazar Street, Calcutta, the Association thrived through public support and was envisioned as a “solely native and purely national” scientific institution. Its mission was to advance science through original research and practical applications. Early lecturers included Father Lafont, J. C. Bose, Asutosh Mukherjee, and others, while leaders like Vidyasagar and Kesab Chandra Sen served on the first Trustee Board. A major milestone came with C. V. Raman’s arrival in 1907, leading to the discovery of the Raman Effect in 1928 and his Nobel Prize in 1930. The Association became India’s key centre for advanced physical science research, attracting renowned scientists such as S. Bhagavantam, M. N. Saha, and L. Srivastava. 1528
