About Kerala Agricultural Unviersity
The history of agricultural education in Kerala dates back to 1896 when the Travancore State initiated a scheme to train young men in scientific agriculture at the Demonstration Farm, Karamana, now the Cropping Systems Research Centre under Kerala Agricultural University. Agriculture became an optional middle school subject in 1922 at Aluva, later expanding to Kottarakkara and Konni. Higher education in agriculture and veterinary sciences began with the Agricultural College at Vellayani and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Mannuthy in 1955, affiliated to the University of Kerala after 1956. Postgraduate programs started in the 1960s. Following national recommendations, Kerala Agricultural University was established in 1971 and began functioning in 1972, incorporating colleges and research stations. In 2011, it was trifurcated into KAU, KVASU, and KUFOS. Today, KAU has eight colleges, multiple research stations, KVKs, extension units, and an Institute of Agricultural Technology.
