About UNIVERSITY OF KERALA
The origins of the University can be traced to two pioneering institutions of modern learning in Kerala — the University College, Thiruvananthapuram, and the Trivandrum Observatory. The University College began as the Maharaja’s Free School in 1834, established by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal with Mr. John Roberts, a Christian missionary, serving as the Headmaster. It expanded into a college in 1866 and was affiliated with the University of Madras. When the University of Travancore was established, its academic departments were integrated into the University, but they reverted to the college once again after the University of Kerala was formed in 1957. Today, the University College remains affiliated to the University, preserving its historic association. The Trivandrum Observatory, founded in 1838, had the internationally renowned scientist John Caldecott, FRS, as its first Director. Although it became part of the Travancore University, it continued for some time as an independent government institution. It now holds the distinction of being the oldest institution under the University of Kerala. 1507
