About National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR)
Recognizing the need for highly trained technical educators to support India’s growing industrialization, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (then Ministry of Education), Government of India, established four Regional Technical Teachers’ Training Institutes in 1967—now known as the National Institutes of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR) at Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, and Kolkata. The Chandigarh institute, developed in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Government until 1974, was created to strengthen polytechnic education across the northern states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. It operates as an autonomous body registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and is governed by a Board of Governors. From its inception, the institute has offered long-term training programs for polytechnic teachers and has played a key role in curriculum development for the region. To enhance teacher competency in implementing these curricula, short-term training programs have been conducted since 1967. A Media Centre was established in 1981 to produce print and non-print instructional materials. 1411
