About Adikavi Nannaya University
Acharya Nagarjuna University derives its name and inspiration from the renowned Buddhist philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna, who established an ancient centre of learning on the banks of the Krishna River centuries ago. The present university, located close to this historic site, continues that legacy of knowledge and intellectual pursuit. The University was established in 1976 under Act 43 of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature and later governed by Act 4 of 1991. In recognition of its cultural and philosophical heritage, it was renamed Acharya Nagarjuna University through the A.P. Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004. The institution evolved from a Post-Graduate Centre set up by Andhra University at Nallapadu, Guntur, in 1976, created to meet the higher education needs of the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. Fulfilling the aspirations of the region, Nagarjuna University formally came into existence in August 1976.
