About Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies
Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath, Varanasi is a government supported deemed to be university fully funded by the Ministry of Culture. Established in 1967 as a wing of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University and inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama, it gained deemed university status in 1988. Inspired by the Nalanda Buddhist tradition, the institute was created to support Tibetan youth in exile and students from the Himalayan region. Located on a green 29 acre campus near Deer Park, it is recognized as a leading centre for Buddhism and Indo Tibetan Studies and holds NAAC A grade. CIHTS is dedicated to preserving, translating and promoting ancient Buddhist knowledge while offering a vibrant, research driven academic environment with modern facilities. 1537
