About Sir J.J.School of Art, Architecture & Design, Mumbai
Established in 1857, Sir JJ School of Art is one of Indias oldest and most prestigious institutions for Art, Architecture and Design education. Founded with a generous donation of ₹1,00,000 from Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, the campus spans nine acres and is recognised as a heritage site by the Government of India. Over the last 160 years, JJ has set benchmark standards in creative education. The first drawing class began on March 2, 1857, and by 1866 the institute came under the Government of India. Key ateliers such as Decorative Painting, Modelling and Ornamental Wrought Iron Work were introduced in 1865. Over time, major departments evolved, including the School of Architecture (1900) and Applied Art, both later renamed as the Sir JJ College of Architecture and Sir JJ Institute of Applied Art. The School became affiliated with the University of Mumbai in 1981. 1461
