About Bharathiar University
Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, was established in February 1982 under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981, evolving from the University of Madras Postgraduate Centre. Recognized by the UGC in 1985, it has 39 departments offering 54 postgraduate programs along with M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. An affiliating university, its jurisdiction covers Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, and The Nilgiris with 145 affiliated colleges. Accredited A++ by NAAC, the university ranks 10th among State Public Universities in NIRF 2025 and is in the 601-800 range globally in THE World University Rankings 2026.
