The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), established on 20.09.1989 through Act 42 of 1989, is Indias first veterinary university. Its origins trace back to 1876 when the Madras Veterinary College began as an Agricultural School in Chennai, offering diploma and certificate courses in veterinary and animal sciences. The institution became a full-fledged college on 01.10.1903 at Dobbin Hall, admitting 20 students to a three-year GMVC diploma programme. For many decades, it remained the only veterinary college in the former Madras State, laying the strong foundation for TANUVAS to grow into a leading institution in veterinary education, research, and extension.
