About Madras University
The establishment of the University of Madras began with a public petition submitted on 11 November 1839. In January 1840, the University Board was formed with Mr. George Norton as its first President. After 14 years, the Government of India introduced a structured educational policy in 1854, leading to the formal founding of the University on 5 September 1857 through an Act of the Legislative Council of India. Modelled on the University of London, Madras University is regarded as the mother of many older universities in South India. Over time, its jurisdiction has been reduced to three districts of Tamil Nadu due to the creation of new universities. Despite this, it continues to grow, expanding its teaching and research activities. 1720
